Is an LED mask safe for darker skin?

Can people with darker skin safely use an LED mask? Learn which wavelengths, colours, modes and session lengths are most suitable for melanin-rich skin, according to DermXpert Selma.

LED masks are becoming increasingly popular. For darker or melanin-rich skin, it is especially important to understand which colour of light you are using, particularly if your skin is prone to hyperpigmentation. DermXpert Selma van Asselt explains what to look for when using LED on darker skin.




Can darker skin safely use an LED mask?


Yes, darker skin can use an LED mask. Choosing the right colour of light, session length and mode is important.


Darker skin contains more melanin. This pigment absorbs some of the light in the upper layers of the skin. At the same time, melanin-rich skin can be more prone to additional pigmentation. The wavelengths used and any heat build-up are therefore especially important.

Which LED colour is most suitable for darker skin?


“Red light between approximately 630 and 660 nanometres is generally regarded as a safe choice for darker skin tones. It penetrates deeper into the skin and may support collagen processes without activating melanin production,” says Selma.


Red light


Red light between approximately 630 and 660 nanometres supports circulation and cellular energy in the skin. In turn, this supports processes linked to collagen and elastin. Selma sees red light as a suitable foundation for darker skin tones.


Near-infrared light


Near-infrared light at 830 nanometres supports collagen production, skin recovery and circulation. It may also help calm redness and inflammatory responses. Deep near-infrared light at 1072 nanometres is used to support even deeper layers of the skin.


Amber light


Amber light at 605 nanometres can help with redness and hyperpigmentation and supports skin hydration.


For darker skin, Selma therefore mainly recommends modes with red, amber, near-infrared and deep near-infrared light.

Why does blue LED light require extra caution?


Blue LED light is used for acne-related blemishes and to help reduce excess oil. On darker skin, however, blue light may also stimulate melanocytes, according to Selma. These are the cells that produce melanin.


According to Selma, research suggests that blue light may cause more pronounced and longer-lasting pigmentation in darker skin tones. “The risk depends on the dose: the more intense or prolonged the exposure, the greater the chance of unwanted pigmentation,” she explains.


Heat build-up in the skin may increase this risk further.


This does not mean that people with darker skin can never use blue light. It does mean that blue light should only be used selectively and in a controlled way.


How can you use blue light as safely as possible?


Selma advises using blue light only when active blemishes are present. Her key guidelines are:

  • preferably combine blue light with red light;
  • keep the session under ten minutes;
  • ideally switch off blue light at around the eight-minute mark;
  • stop using blue light once active blemishes begin to settle;
  • then continue with a routine centred on red light.


Do not use blue light automatically for every spot. If your skin develops dark marks easily, always take the risk of additional pigmentation into account.

How often can you use LED on darker skin?


As a general guideline, Selma recommends no more than four sessions per week, with a rest day between sessions.


A possible schedule is:

  • Monday;
  • Wednesday;
  • Friday;
  • Sunday.


“A session should not last longer than ten minutes,” says Selma. A longer session does not automatically deliver better results and may increase skin temperature.


For darker skin, consistent and controlled use matters more than long or daily sessions.


Which mode should you choose?


When an LED mask combines several wavelengths, Selma recommends choosing a mode with red, amber, near-infrared and deep near-infrared light.

This combination addresses redness, hyperpigmentation and hydration while supporting collagen and elastin. According to Selma, the power is also distributed across several wavelengths, which means the skin is less likely to become too warm.


Modes without blue light are therefore often the most logical foundation for darker skin. A mode with blue light can be used selectively for active blemishes, but it is not essential for daily or standard use.

What should you look for when choosing an LED mask?


For darker or melanin-rich skin, these points are particularly important:


  • Check the exact wavelengths

Do not look at colour alone. For darker skin, Selma highlights red light between 630 and 660 nanometres and near-infrared light between 830 and 1072 nanometres as an important foundation.


  • Choose a short, controlled session

A fixed session length of no more than ten minutes helps prevent overuse.


  • Pay attention to heat build-up

An LED mask should not feel uncomfortably warm. Heat may contribute to unwanted pigmentation in melanin-rich skin.


  • Look for combination modes

A combination of amber, red and near-infrared light can support redness, hyperpigmentation, hydration and skin firmness at the same time.


  • Be cautious with blue light

Use blue light only when it suits your skin needs, rather than automatically as the standard mode.
